Madam, - The Minister for the Environment, Martin Cullen, a self-proclaimed "soldier of destiny" sees no wrong in delivering the last body-blow to our nation's heritage in the form of a new amendment to the National Monuments Act.

This law, if passed, will sanction the destruction of the remains of Carrickmines Castle, and allow an onslaught on further national monuments including Waterford's Viking remains, the round tower at Clondalkin, and most critically the landscape of the Hill of Tara.

Ironically, what Mr Cullen is putting at risk is part of a sacred landscape which includes the Lia Fáil, or "stone of destiny" - a stone which uttered a cry at the inauguration of a legitimate king. - Yours, etc.,

SINÉAD WARD, Corduff, Carrick on Shannon, Co Leitrim.
