Sir, - Has Des O'Malley ("How can we be neutral about the abuse of human rights?", The Irish Times, March 26th) forgotten that one of the protagonists in the NATO alliance currently bombing Yugoslavia is Turkey? Turkey has an appalling record in its treatment of its indigenous minority, the Kurds. The repression is so bad that they are forbidden to speak their own language and any suggestion of autonomy is rejected out of hand by the authorities in Ankara. Torture is commonplace and whole villages have been decimated.
Never once has Bill Clinton or Tony Blair castigated Turkey for its appalling human rights record. There is clearly one law for the Serbs and another for the Turks. - Yours etc., Sean Whelan,
Ormond Keep, Nenagh, Co Tipperary.
