Sir, - Congratulations to Kevin Myers on his fine piece on Neville Chamberlain (An Irishman's Diary, September, 8th). It is worth comparing his tribute - "one of the most decent and honourable men ever to hold high office anywhere" with that paid to Mr Chamberlain by Eamon de Valera in the radio address often referred to as his "Reply to Churchill".
Mr de Valera referred to Mr Chamberlain as someone "who will yet, I believe, find the honoured place in British history which is due to him, as certainly he will find it in any fair record of the relations between Britain and ourselves."
Yes, Mr de Valera was more than just an admirer of Patrick Pearse. - Yours, etc.,
John O'Mahony, Renmore, Galway.
