Sir, - As a southside shopper who has paid frequent visits to the new northside Jervis Street centre, I take umbrage at your review today (December 4th) of one of its shops - Dorothy Perkins. Rightly or wrongly, I consider myself to be a discerning shopper (I am certainly not "mindless"!) and like a lot of people I know, I am delighted to see any new shop, regardless of its nationality, open in Dublin.
Fashion can be fickle, but surely the bigger picture is that the Jervis Street centre is Irish developed, employs Irish staff and that's surely good news for all. Furthermore, at this fragile time in the peace process, it seems unnecessary to incite petty resentment towards English retailers in Ireland. Does your correspondent similarly resent Irish fashion companies and designers exporting into Britain? - Yours, etc.,
Bloomfield Avenue,
Dublin 8.
