Nice Treaty Referendum

Sir, - The European Union project represents the political destiny of the Irish nation

Sir, - The European Union project represents the political destiny of the Irish nation. Ireland should be to the fore in its development, ensuring that our democratic, representative heritage and our acknowledged sense of justice remain present at the heart of Europe. We need to maintain support for the continuing evolution of the project. The Nice Treaty aims to ensure that adequate institutional provision is made for the geographic expansion of the European project to embrace all of continental Europe save for European Russia. By embracing this expansion we are laying the foundations for a harmonious, prosperous and peaceful Europe for generations to come - a Europe that will serve as a guide, example and prototype for a harmonious, prosperous and peaceful world.

The modern and the national have passed. Nice represents the political future of the republic, negotiated in good faith. A Yes vote then is a vote for continued peace, prosperity and harmony in Europe and extending from Europe to the whole world. - Yours, etc.,

Brian Harrington, Dangan Heights, Newcastle, Galway.
