Nice Treaty Rejection

Sir, - The pro-Nice lobby made much of the enlargement issue during the lead-in to the referendum. Now the votes are in and the treaty has been rejected, let's have a survey to see why those who voted No did so. I suspect it had little or nothing to do with enlargement - people are all for that as far as I can see!

Perhaps it is now time for the government to take more seriously the genuine worries people have about the military and sovereignty issues which our EC membership are increasingly raising. The government's volte- face on holding a referendum on the PfP was rejected by up 70 per cent of those in an Irish Times survey at the time - and that issue is still fresh in the minds of many voters. The Nice vote was the first opportunity people have had to make their voices heard on the EC since then. Maybe now more attention will be paid to the people.

This is, after all, a democracy! - Yours, etc.,
