Sir, - Opening a House of Commons debate on Nice on July 4th, Mr Jack Straw asserted: "Increasing the use of majority voting would allow Britain to force through reforms against opposition from other European states."
First Herr Schroeder puts his foot in it, then Signor Prodi, and now Mr Straw. In their arrogance, the unreconstructed elitists of the EU, unable to accept that their anti-democratic agenda has been derailed, have not yet learned the need for a minimum of discretion in continuing to push that agenda.
Opponents of Nice are being handed ammunition on a plate, and may well adopt the motto: with opponents like this, who needs allies? - Yours, etc.,
Raymond Deane, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
