Sir, - It is amusing to see that Judge John Garavan used the universal disclaimer "at least that is what I am told" as he thrashed the collective reputation of Galway's female nightclubbers.
I have my doubts about how acceptable it would be as a defence if anyone were dragged up in front of the court for dispensing slanderous hearsay.
Why do such remarks seem to be perfectly acceptable when cast in one direction but constitute contempt when cast in the other? - Yours, etc.,
