Sir, - Like Conor Faughnan (January 10th), I found the Christmas Nitelink bus service to be of an exceptionally high standard. The workers and management of Dublin Bus should be congratulated for getting it right.
Nitelink serves as a useful reminder of what's possible with a public sector operator. If the Government would raise its subsidy to Dublin Bus to the EU average, perhaps the standards set with Nitelink could be extended to all other times.
The lesson is very clear: deregulation and competition are not the answer to the problems of Dublin Bus. On the contrary, allowing the workers and management, by means of a greatly extended subsidy, to reach their full potential, as demonstrated by the success of Nitelink, is by far the best solution to the problems of this part of Dublin's public transport infrastructure. - Yours, etc.,
Ciaran McKenna, Greenville Place, Clanbrassil Street, Dublin 8.
