Sir, - I have no idea why Mr Martin Ferris is mystified as to why the Taoiseach will not have him or any other elected member of Sinn Féin sharing power in a future Fianna Fáil-led government (The Irish Times, January 7th).
Perhaps if he read Bunreacht na hÉireann he would have a clearer view of what is required. It gives us one Army, Óglaigh na hÉireann, and one civil authority, the Gárda Síochána.
Until Mr Ferris and Sinn Féin dissociate themselves completely from this illegal organisation styling itself the IRA, Mr Ahern and FF will have nothing to do with them.
There are alternatives for Mr Ferris. He can campaign for the legitimising of the IRA as a legal organisation, or for its complete disbandment. - Yours, etc.,
C. McGUINN,
Friars Hill,
Galway.
