No place for a medical graduate

Sir, – An alarming report published this month by the Medical Education and Training Unit of the HSE (Implementation of the Reform of the Intern Year) describes a “significant deficit in the number of intern posts available for the Government-funded expanded number of medical graduates”. This is the perfect storm for so-called “domestically-trained” doctors-to-be like me.

Having been fortunate to have had my education subsidised by the Irish exchequer for nine years it is now possible that the position for which I have been trained does not exist.

As a student, a citizen, and hopefully a future taxpayer, I implore the Minister for Health to create these much needed posts and engage with the report’s recommendations to avoid a significant waste of State resources. – Yours, etc,
