Madam, - During a recent visit to Dublin I was extremely impressed with the great spirit of energy and renewal being displayed throughout the city - especially along the south quays where I worked as a young man.

I was particularly pleased with the redevelopment scheme in O'Connell Street that has brought wider pavements, less traffic and the replanting of trees to create more of a boulevard atmosphere.

But why in the world is that building on the corner of Bachelors Walk and Lower O'Connell Street permitted to remain in such a shoddy condition in such a prime location? Its horrible visage is unavoidable while either strolling or driving across the bridge heading north.

When the wrapping around Daniel O'Connell's statue is removed you can be sure that the angel seated to his right will be most disappointed to find the same, bleak old building is still festering in front of her. - Yours, etc,
