Madam, – The announcement (Home News, January 22nd) that taxpayers of this State have been committed to expenditure of €480 million for upgrading roads in Northern Ireland beggars belief. A few short weeks ago, as part of our bankruptcy bailout, the British government agreed to lend us about €8 billion. How pleased that same government must be to learn that we will commit some of those funds building a road for them in Northern Ireland.

Why stop there? Why not show our appreciation of the German government for their part in our bailout by offering to build a motorway from Berlin to Bremen? – Yours, etc,
