The only reason we put last Wednesday's story (January 8th) about advance warnings of the Mountjoy Jail siege on page one was because it was a damn good story. I am sorry to disappoint Dick Walsh (Irish Times, January 11th), but it would take a lot more than a wild attack on a sister paper by the governor of Mountjoy to make me choose my lead story on any other basis.

And, for the record, my old friend and mentor Vincent Doyle is well capable of defending his distinguished reputation as editor of the Irish Independent without any corporate connivance by me. - Yours, etc.,

Editor, Evening Herald.
