Madam, - The Weekend Review of your edition of November 10th carried an interview with the former Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, Mrs Nuala O'Loan, who typically left out an important point when she referred to legal action on her Omagh report.
The judicial review of the Omagh report by her office was not sought by the Police Federation, but by the Police Association for Northern Ireland, a statutory body representing serving police officers of all ranks.
The judicial review was withdrawn on foot of an acknowledgment by Mrs O'Loan that certain PSNI members who were criticised in her report should have been given notice of the allegations against them and a better opportunity to respond - a basic human right. It was a commitment of which the Ombudsman had to be reminded until the end of her tenure of office. - Yours, etc,
TERRY SPENCE, Chairman, Police Federation for Northern Ireland, Garnerville Road, Belfast BT4 2NX.
