Sir, - Am I wrong in thinking that the nurses' unions made an agreement concerning levels of pay under Partnership 2000? Does this not mean anything to them? What do they think their strike says to the average private sector PAYE worker who doesn't have the backing of a powerful organisation that can hold the Government and the public to ransom? It says: "Yes, we will agree to be of service to you up until the point when the terms of this agreement are no longer to our liking."
If nurses are unhappy with pay agreements made on their behalf by unions then that is a between the nurses and their union bosses. If they wish to retain the respected position they have rightfully earned in Irish society they will have to recognise that agreements entered into in good faith have to be honoured by all sides. - Yours, etc., Garreth McDaid,
Sandyford Hall View, Dublin 18.
