Sir, - Democracy cannot tolerate a situation where one law applies for the rich and another for the poor. This is a simple concept and one, it appears, that our Government has yet to grasp, as shown by its actions in relation to the Sheedy case, and its recent nomination of Hugh O'Flaherty for the European Investment Bank. These circumstances create the perception that equality before the law is dependent on your level of access to the machinery of justice.
Members of the Government - and indeed correspondents in the media - who attempt to trivialise the issues involved are merely displaying an alarming ignorance or disregard of the fundamentals of democracy. - Yours, etc.,
