Madam, - I would be interested to know what your readers feel about the restoration works of the obelisk on top of Killiney Hill. I question the merit of undertaking such works.

In today's litigious climate, there is no doubt that health and safety concerns play a part. And, although I am no expert, I am sure the monument has architectural and aesthetic appeal.

However, it is what it represents that makes me wonder if it should not be allowed to crumble to the ground and become part of the distant past, vaguely remembered but certainly not revered.

The obelisk was constructed in 1842 to commemorate Queen Victoria's visit to Ireland, her "dominion" during the dark period when structural violence was inflicted on Irish society. I would be much more comfortable if such memories were allowed to fade with the passage of time and that one day my children or my children's children may walk by a mound of rubble; all that remains of that very painful time.
