Sir, – Peadar Mac Maghnais (August 23rd) asserts that the Army does not use its official title Óglaigh na hÉireann. Since the formation of the Army in 1922, all serving members of all ranks, both regular and reserve, wear in their caps a badge that contains the logo "FF" for "Fianna Fáil" (Soldiers of Destiny). This is surrounded in circular form by the text "Óglaigh na hÉireann". This badge is also displayed on all Army vehicles, and as a logo on the stationery, books and manuals used by the Defence Forces.
The significance of the cap badges design was taught to all recruits on enlistment, and as a former company quartermaster sergeant in the Army, I can assure Mr Mac Maghnais that we were familiar with our official title and wore it on our caps every day. – Yours, etc,
TOM BRACE,
Dublin 8.
