Sir, – The following is published on the website of the Referendum Commission, regarding the referendum on inquiries by the Oireachtas: “The House or Houses would have discretion as to the procedures to be applied in any given case. The balance struck in any given case may have important implications for people affected by an inquiry. It is not possible to state definitively what role, if any, the courts would have in reviewing the procedures adopted by the Houses.” The Referendum Commission is independent and does not argue for a Yes or No vote.
