On The Buses

Sir, - I, like many Dublin commuters, never cease to wonder at the unpredictability of bus services in this city. One day buses will come as scheduled; the next day there is apparently a depleted fleet when one finds oneself waiting 30 to 45 minutes for a bus which due every 15 minutes.

There are only a limited number of logical explanations for this phenomenon. Either there are not enough buses to serve existing timetables, or a number of them break down frequently, or Bus Atha Cliath is heavily understaffed. One slightly far-fetched but nonetheless tempting explanation is that buses are disappearing into a fatal Bermuda triangle somewhere en route or just as they leave headquarters.

In any case, it seems that nothing less than a concerted effort is being made by somebody, somewhere,to ensure that timetables are not reliably observed. I would appreciate if somebody could enlighten me further on this fascinating subject. - Yours, etc., David Thunder,
