On the buses – new uses for CCTV

Sir, – If we are looking for imaginative places to deploy CCTV, I would suggest on the front of Dublin Bus vehicles. Cameras are already in place inside buses but a front-facing camera would catch those car owners who flout the road traffic laws by driving or parking in bus lanes. The State is currently spending hundreds of millions on expensive light-rail infrastructure but ignoring the humble bus lane.

It makes me seethe when I see a bus with 60-odd passengers held up by a few selfish fools who think that turning left a few hundred metres up the road confers an exemption to the traffic norms.

I am surprised Dublin Bus management and unions do not protest against the impeding of their assets and the inconveniencing of their customers, as indeed I am surprised that the commuters stuck outside my apartment do not rebel against the attitude of officialdom towards their unnecessarily delayed journeys.

A revenue-sharing model from the fines such CCTV would bring might cause a change in attitude. – Yours, etc,
