On-the-spot fines for cyclists

Sir, – So on-the-spot fines are being introduced to penalise cyclists who break red lights.

If this initiative is about road safety and not just a populist anti-cyclist move, I presume the same fines will be issued to drivers who race amber lights and crash red lights at the same pedestrian junctions.

I checked with the Road Safety Authority’s website: last year 190 people were killed by motor vehicles, nobody was killed by a bike. – Yours , etc, JIM O’CONNOR Rathmines, Dublin 6. Sir, – Now that footpaths are cycle paths and pedestrian crossings are cycle crossings where, exactly, does the Minister for Transport propose pedestrians go to walk safely?– Yours, etc, G SHEILS Drogheda, Co Louth.
