Sir, - Virginia Kennerly's Leyter (May 5th) raises some interesting questions. What is the difference between ecumenism and recruiting for one's own church? I always.

thought ecumenism meant working within one's own church for reform and, so, leading eventually to the reunion on all churches.

Ecumenism needs lots of encouragement in today's climate. It calls for a long-term view, rather than a short-term one. A sense of "Rome's difficulties are the other churches' opportunities" could inhibit the worthy cause of ecumenism. - Yours etc.,
