'Ordinary' people

I believe this term was conjured up by certain politicians who felt embarrassed or who were afraid of describing people as "working class". Of course the working class are extraordinary people (having survived the 1980s in Ireland) and are as diverse as "the plain people of Ireland", to borrow the phrase of a former writer at this newspaper.

By the way, do you remember when "contractors" were called "mercenaries"? - Yours, etc.,
