Sir, - As a solicitor, I have represented refugees for six years in England and Ireland. Some years before that I was an economic migrant, as many of us were, forced to leave our country for England, America and other countries.
I would echo the sentiment of Father Patrick McCafferty (December 18th), who spoke against oppression and racism against our brothers and sisters here and around the world.
I believe it is worth remembering, in our predominantly Christian country, that Jesus was a black man who fled the religious persecution of King Herod.
When considering our economic self-interest we must hold tight to the principle that we are all our brothers' keepers no matter who or where they are. - Yours, etc.,
