OVER-SEAS AID

Sir, - I refer to your report that the Government is increasing its contribution to overseas aid by £16m to £122m

Sir, - I refer to your report that the Government is increasing its contribution to overseas aid by £16m to £122m. I wish to commend them, especially Dick Spring, Minister for Foreign Affairs.

Another encouraging report stated that Ruairi Quinn, as Minister for Finance, made a stand on the IMF's new low interest lending facility. He made it clear that the Irish Government will not contribute to the facility until it can be assured that the scheme will work to alleviate poverty and promote recovery in developing countries.

The enlightened and compassionate attitude of our Government, and in particular of the two Ministers, is welcome and refreshing and should benefit many thousands of the world's poorest people. - Yours, etc.,
