Sir, - In The Irish Times of December 30th last Dr Garret FitzGerald warned us of the coming economic crisis.

The outstanding performance of our economy in recent years is now being attacked on several fronts: the US high-tech downturn; receding confidence in world markets; BSE; the impact of foot-and-mouth; the teachers' strike and its implications for the PPF. Combined with these are our inflationary 2001 Budget and our inflationary National Development Plan.

If we see an end to the property boom and high consumer credit we could well see growth in negative equity and all that that means.

While we may not be able to do much more than we are doing about several of these matters, we could still take the advice of all our EU partners about overheating our economy. - Yours, etc.,
