Madam, - There has been much discussion and report in your paper over the last year about us not fulfilling our obligations to Third World countries.
There have also been reports in your paper about Irish farmers being fined for breaching their quotas for milk production.
It may seem very simplistic, but could we not be allowed to pay some of our dues to overseas aid "in kind"? By converting our over production of milk to powdered milk products, we could offer this as part of our obligation to the Third World. Powdered milk is one of the staple foodstuffs required by many of the poorer countries.
This might help to ensure we kept to our milk quotas, didn't get fined, paid our "aid bills" and even created some employment in the manufacturer of the milk powder as well. - Yours, etc,
DEIRDRE BYERS, Waltham Terrace, Blackrock, Co Dublin.
