Madam, – Dr Maurice Guéret’s statistics regarding the overstaffing at the Department of Health (January 12th) make frightening reading for anyone concerned about our economy and are deeply depressing for those in the private sector facing redundancy.

I suggest that each of the top 350 managers submit his/her job specification as he/she sees it on two pages of A4 and send it a panel of three consultants/doctors for analysis. Such an exercise would quickly reveal the excess fat in the Department of Health so that an immediate redundancy programme could be implemented. No management consultants need be hired for this work.

It won’t happen of course. With five ministers involved, how could it? – Yours, etc,
