Sir, – French president Nicolas Sarkozy is right. The arguments against further European integration have been lost. It has now been established, beyond any doubt, that the euro can no longer exist as a credible currency while the 17 euro-zone countries differ widely on ways to end market volatility.

Tinkering with treaty changes will simply prolong the agony. Political and monetary union may not be the desired option for most countries, but the markets are in this battle for the long haul and our current paymasters now realise that the game is up.

We either accept our fate as full members of a first-tier European country or we throw in the towel. The latter option would be an inconceivable return to a 1950s scenario and a political upheaval that would threaten our very existence as a democratic entity. Hobson’s choice? – Yours, etc,
