Sir, - Mr Joseph Briscoe (November 8th) quotes Golda Meir on "Arabs", that "we will have peace when they love their children more than they hate us". The choice of Meir and the use of the word "Arab" is apt. She also said "there is no such thing as a Palestinian . . . it was not as though there was a Palestinian people in Palestine considering itself as a Palestine people and we came and threw them out and took their country away from them. They did not exist" (June 15th, 1969).
Israelis themselves have moved on since Meir's time, for the most part, and do recognise that there is such as thing as a Palestinian. Selective quotations from the past can only distort the present debate. - Yours, etc.,
Piaras Mac Einri, Model Farm Road, Cork.
