Madam, - I am quite sure that the Dublin Airport Authority are capable of defending themselves but may a disinterested third party who values the benefits of semi-state enterprise make three obvious points in response to your correspondent Richard Bannister (Nov 27th)?

1. The DAA do not have a monopoly on car parking at Dublin airport - at least one competitor offers parking at €7 a day, surely less than the full cost of a round trip anywhere on any airline.

2. Providing the convenience of a short-term parking space a few yards from check-in must be expensive, so if one wants to occupy such a space for a whole day one must be prepared to pay.

3. At least the DAA charge only for service provided; Michael O'Leary will not refund "airport charges" to people forced to cancel, although the DAA do not charge him for these. - Yours, etc,

Madam, - Might I suggest to Richard Bannister that on any future trips abroad, instead of parking in the short-term car park, he could save on the astronomical charges by taking out a loan in the airport bank, leave his car with them as collateral security, and on return pay off the loan and interest, collect his car and save a fortune. - Yours, etc,
