Sir, - Not so many years ago when trains passed children used to wave. Now they throw stones. I was on a train yesterday evening slowing for Howth Junction when I saw two young children - a small girl, her hair in a ponytail and a young boy, both under 10 years old - almost instinctively, throw stones at the train. The stones were too small to make any impression on the glass, their little hands not able to throw something heavier, saving somebody from a nasty shock. I wondered why someone so young would want to hurt rather than smile and wave. I'm still wondering. - Yours, etc.,
