Madam, - It would appear that there are fewer people lying on trolleys in our A&E departments this winter. This news will undoubtedly be heralded as a triumph by the HSE.
However, the reality is that a very large number of patients around the country have had planned surgical procedures cancelled in order to free up hospital beds for those on trolleys. I have spoken to colleagues who have informed me that these cancellations have caused enormous distress for patients, many of whom are suffering from serious illnesses.
This type of medical musical chairs is being played out in hospitals around this country. It will continue until the HSE acknowledges that there are not enough beds in our health system.
Easing the suffering of one group of patients by punishing another is not a solution. Those responsible deserve no congratulation. - Your, etc,
