Sir, - Now that we have hundreds of millions lying around, surely the first thing we should do with a few of them is provide the most basic requirements of a section of our people who are surely the most deprived of the deprived in our society.
These people are, of course, the travelling community whose problem appears to be that they choose to exercise their democratic right to live their lives in the time-honoured nomadic way, a lifestyle that exists throughout Europe.
Surely now is the time to show our humanitarianism, our compassion and our willingness to embrace all our children equally, particularly those with whom we don't necessarily agree, which is the hallmark of true Christian love. - Yours, etc.,
