Madam, - For the Government to evade responsibility for so basic a service to the people as that provided by An Post, by introducing profit as the measure of effectiveness, is surely undemocratic. There are many essential community services that by their very nature could not be expected to operate as commercial enterprises.

There are better ways than annual profit to judge the value and merit of such services - services that are at the very essence of democracy. - Yours, etc.,
