Sir, – Regarding Government’s plan to grant “free GP care” for those with long-term illnesses and eventually “free GP care” for everyone (Front page, September 14th).
Unless my economic teachers were misleading me, the definition of “cost free” only applies to the recipient of the service or services. Like a savings bank, money must be put in (via taxation) before anything (a GP’s services) can be withdrawn.
If Government means “absolutely free” delivery of GP medical care for everyone, does it have a plan in mind, which will entice the general practitioners to work for nothing? I doubt it. More taxation must be introduced and therefore the age-old Irish solution to an Irish problem of robbing Peter to pay Paul will be instituted.
Ireland’s public health care system has already struck the iceberg and is rapidly sinking. The gall of politicians shoving another impossible dream down the public’s throats is more than just callous, it’s plain criminal. – Yours, etc,
