Sir, - With the death of Payne Stewart, the golf world has lost one of its true gentlemen. While at times he was certainly outspoken, there can be no doubt that he always had the best traditions of the game at heart. He was, in an arena increasingly dominated by "Robopros", a character, one who brought colour and exuberance to the golf course, always in the right manner.

One saw an example of this true sportsman's nature at this year's controversial Ryder Cup. When it would have been very easy for Stewart to hide behind the flag, he came out openly to condemn those Americans who heckled Colin Mongomerie, even pointing them out to security personnel. He again re-enforced his admiration for Montgomerie at the Dunhill Cup several weeks ago.

Stewart was also a great friend of Irish golf, loving the challenge that our links golf offers. He was due to be honorary captain of Waterville GC next year. He will certainly be missed. - Yours, etc.,
