Sir, - Are they still looking for reds under the bed in Limerick? Cllr Tim O'Malley's reference to Russia and East Germany (March 14th) in the context of social justice traduces the argument.
Concepts such as a universal health system, adequate childcare and increased access to education are features of the vast majority of the liberal democracies that constitute the European Union. Is Cllr O'Malley seriously contending that "individual freedom" is lacking in Sweden, Denmark and France?
It is also worth noting that the ultimately pernicious doctrine of communism was a direct philosophical and subsequently practical response to the dehumanising aspects of 19th century laissez-faire policies and the utilatarian framework within which these policies operated. This is an ideology with which our new right McCreevyism, with its emphasis on crass individualism, has much in common.
The provision of a universal health system is the great added value which can be gained from our present economic boom. We may not get the chance again for some time. It is regrettable that the PDs, who in fairness have contributed significantly to political movement in this country, should be opposed to this. The party and its leader, Mary Harney, appear to be on the verge of confusing radicalism with extremism.
Finally, it is sad to see Cllr O'Malley refer so disparagingly to free education, considering the great work done by the late Donough O'Malley to develop this benefit from which a great many, including myself, have benefited. - Yours, etc.
Cllr Jim D'arcy (Fine Gael), Sandygrove Close, Blackrock, Co Louth.
