Peace and Cruelty

sir - I wonder if D. K. Henderson, who wrote (June 27th) about cruelty to Lobsters and the only way to avoid it (viz by not eating them) would agree that the only way to avoid cruelty to cows, pigs, sheep, hens, fish(and so forth) is also by not eating them.

The tone of his letter suggests that he probably would agree , and he might as well anyway , because, as a generalisation, it is true. To cease eating flesh is to make an effective personal statement against all cruelty and violence. To continue to eat flesh(knowing something of the cruelty and violence in which you are complicit, or carefully avoiding such knowledge) is to make a strong statement again kindness and gentleness, and perhaps, ultimately, against peace. - Yours, etc., Ruarc Gahan,
