Madam, - After one of the worst weekends of carnage on our roads, it is time for the Minister to realise the penalty points system is not working. The high number caught for so-called speeding is not a true reflection as a number of the checkpoints are in "easy-target" areas, e.g. the 40 m.p.h. areas on the Kilmacanogue bypass and the Stillorgan Road. I rarely hear of accidents, let alone fatal accidents, in those areas.
With almost 40 more dead on our roads so far this year than in the same period last year, it is obvious the authorities have got it very wrong. - Yours, etc.,
JOE HARVEY, Glenageary Woods, Glenageary, Co Dublin.
