Sir, – We see yet another twist in the saga that is Northern Ireland with the impending resignation of Peter Robinson just as it would appear that recent difficulties have been overcome. He was to me and many others a very colourless and dour character with a rather chequered history.
What is strange is the reaction of Martin McGuinness, Gerry Adams, the Taoiseach and other leaders in the warmth of their praise of him. This collective response belies the body language evident in any television footage of their appearance together in public. To me they certainly gave the impression that they were in each other’s company under duress. That may have been window-dressing for their respective communities but it says a lot about how little real progress has been made in terms of inter-community relations. – Yours, etc,
DEREK MacHUGH,
