Madam, – Odd that ephemeral footballers and pop stars can be paid multiples of what the greatest pianist that Ireland has ever produced may receive and no one quibbles.

John O’Conor is not just Ireland’s and one of the world’s leading concert performers, he is probably one of the most celebrated contemporary teachers of piano, and much else besides. Yet he has been urged to repay monies which “appear to breach public service guidelines” (Home News, December 4th).
