Madam, - An American professor tells us we should not prohibit smoking in restaurants and bars (The Irish Times, February 3rd). His reason is that an American study shows that emissions from cars cause as much if not more damage in American cities as passive smoking in bars and restaurants here.

The logic of this is hard to follow. So is his branding of those with whom he does not agree as hypocrites and zealots.

There is ample evidence that passive smoking is injurious to health and nicotine should be prohibited as proposed. If, in addition, measures are found necessary to improve air quality then let these measures be taken also. It is not an either this or that situation. - Yours, etc.,
