Planning in Kerry

Madam, - I agree with M.T

Madam, - I agree with M.T.O'Raghalligh (April 22nd) that Kerry "has been blighted by single dwellings" - and I would add that there has been little or no planting done to soften their impact.

Last summer my sister and I walked from the ruined village of Knockane along narrow, third-class roads to Killarney, a distance of about 10 kilometres. On both sides of the roads single houses spoiled the view. Any gaps were occupied by "site for sale" notices. The traffic was incessant, making these formerly tranquil roads unpleasant and dangerous to walk along.

On Valentia Island it was a similar story. As we looked inland from Bray Head at the sprawl of bungalows, two Scottish visitors enquired if there were any planning laws in Ireland. I had thought of completing the Kerry Way this year, but between access problems and bungalow blight I am off to Scotland and Wales! - Yours, etc.,
