Sir, – The National Gallery of Ireland put a post on its Facebook page saying: “We’re looking for some musical volunteers for Culture Night. So, if you would like to showcase your talent, and contribute to the special atmosphere of the gallery on Culture Night, contact us.”
When I enquired about it I was told that it was unpaid, “an opportunity for non-professional musicians to showcase their music here at the gallery, and perhaps get their name out there”.
Is it appropriate for the National Gallery of Ireland to be asking young musicians to work for free?
Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity and the arts whilst generating a sense of community and belonging.
Is this a way to create a sense of “belonging” among musicians, asking them to perform for free while others get paid?
Can't they be given exposure and remuneration?
– Yours, etc,
