Sir, – With reference to Jim Doherty ( Letters, 5th May ) as a member of the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra, I remember playing a very dissonant work which started on the oboe, should have changed to cor anglais for one movement and then back to the oboe for the rest of the work. Quite inadvertently, I played the entire piece both at rehearsals and concert on the oboe, which, as far as the oboe part was concerned, one movement was wrong throughout by the interval of a fifth!
It was only after the concert was over that I noticed my error. The composer, who was also the conductor, said nothing. I also said nothing.
