Sir, - I read that Ireland is fast becoming one of the wealthiest states in Europe (November 23rd). If this is so, can anyone explain to me how young Traveller children remain huddled in flimsy caravans on the sides of our roads? At a time when the country is awash with money, this surely is a great scandal.
While I agree totally with the manner in which the State has dealt with refugees by placing them in hotels and other accommodation, I cannot understand why the same treatment is not afforded to Travellers. They, like the refugees, are casualties of economic forces; they too have become alienated from the political system; they too suffer from discrimination, poor education opportunities, bad sanitation, sewerage and housing.
It's time the Government bit the bullet on Travellers. A minister should be appointed to deal with the issue and to ensure that this generation of young Traveller children are the last to shiver in winter campsites. , I say, shame on you, Ireland, for allowing this to continue at a time of almost material decadence. - Yours, etc.,
P. Kiely, Donegal Town, Co Donegal.
