Madam, – On this, the last day of the reign of Brian Cowen, we should reflect on the career of the most successful Fianna Fáil leader of the modern era.

For was he not the first Fianna Fáil leader to deliver single-party government since Jack Lynch, was he not the man who reduced the Cabinet to the bare constitutional minimum; and what other leader reformed the Oireachtas to the point where they now work weekends. No, he and his like will never be forgotten; no seriously, he and his like will never be forgotten. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – How interesting. Last Thursday, you apparently had no problem with Brian Cowen’s impending Cabinet reshuffle (Editorial, January 20th), which “despite what the Greens may think, is the Taoiseach’s sole prerogative” even if it was to be “jobs for the boys”.

However, in the wake of the now customary over-the-top reaction to such events by our media and political culture, your attitude had completely changed by the next day, when you decided that the Taoiseach’s “sole prerogative” was actually something worse than in the GUBU era of Charles Haughey. Do I hear the sound of a bandwagon here? – Yours, etc,
